BUILDesign Magazine Issue 22

We just released the 22nd edition of the BUILDesign Magazine, and the last one for this year. It has been a great year us, Team BUILDesign, as we reflect through all the stories and features we covered in all the editions released this year. Below is a snapshot of the cover.

Our editor, Wendy Kinya, worked tirelessly to ensure that this particular edition came out on time before you took your break for the Christmas holidays.

In this particular edition, we reviewed the Samburu Saruni Lodge. This is a high end, a thousand dollar a night, facility located at the top of a hill within Kalama Conservancy bordering the Samburu Game Reserve in Samburu County. I have had the opportunity to spend two nights in this facility with a client while we were scouting the area for a possible site for a lodge. The experience was out of this world and is exactly what inspired me to find the owner of the camp, Riccardo Orizio, who later linked me up with his architect, Lengai Croze and contractor, Mark Glenn, who gave us great insights about the lodge. This feature is a must read.

I also had the wonderful opportunity to spend some time with Architect Bashir Ali Mohammed who, despite his advanced age and ill health, gave us the honour and privilege to share his story with us with the help of his daughter, Swabah Ali. Arch. Bashir shared wit us his passion for professional unity and his experience in public service which we have highlighted in this edition.

Our regular contributors have also filled up our pages with great insights. Interior Designer, Nyambura Nugi, talks about the ultimate guide to interior design styles. Brian Munene looks at the must have phone apps for every architect. Architect Vetle Jorgensen talks about flexible plans for houses, to make them easy to modify and customize based on need. Irene Wanjiku’s roofing diary looks at the roof pitch and Eric Loki, Samuel Kerongo and Chandresh Raithatha have given us insights on the environment, landscaping and saunas respectively.
